Sketch to Painting
Sometimes what seems like a great idea for a painting in a sketch, doesn’t translate into paint- for lots of reasons. Rather than invest time and paint on a large canvas I am trying to do a small study where I can further address such elements as composition and palette. Do I have enough information for a larger painting? Am I still excited by the subject? Can I convey an authentic response to the subject or does it feel labored or false? Painting from life provides an immediate connection/relationship with my subject. Can I find that ‘hook’ in the studio?
